Journal Week 03 — Finally... Code
A week of soft skills, new responsibilities, and finally seeing some code.
Brief
Heyo, this week was quite interesting. It was full of events and additional responsibilities that I have started to enjoy.
First interactions with code?
Yesss, as you are reading, I finally got to see some code. I have not really modified or touched it yet, but at least now I have a more realistic and solid understanding of what the application is doing when I try to solve something. I was given a few more options for testing things—a small playground that I share with others because of the resource cost—which is pretty nice, especially because it means depending less on the official shared services to complete my tasks.
Using AI with code now?
Nope, not yet. I am still working on both my soft and hard skills to complete my tasks well, and I have not yet found an appropriate use for AI in my day-to-day cases.
What about the intern life?
Honestly, although I gained more tools to do my job well this week, it was also very packed with events. To start with, it was my birthday, which fortunately coincided with several small events organized by clubs on campus. For example, there were board games and specialty coffee that several people kindly prepared.
In addition, we had an event for interns that I found quite entertaining: a go-kart outing. I lost spectacularly, though. xD
Adding to the birthday celebrations, my girlfriend got me a present, and now I have an amazing split keyboard :D. I will be learning to use it over the next few weeks, so stay tuned :P.
Learning and progress
I was able to use new tools. There are still several areas that I have not practiced enough, and while I trust my understanding of code and how tools work in general, I personally prefer to record Zoom sessions that contain the usage tutorials my team gives me.
This keeps me from having to repeat questions. I honestly believe that recognizing our weaknesses is a step toward progress. I know things do not always stick with me or that I do not learn them the first time, so I prefer having something I can revisit multiple times.
Next steps
-
I want to start working on my intern project, which is about automating internal processes. I would like to find an AI use case for it.
-
I do not have any magic steps to follow right now. I think all that is left is to keep following repetitive steps and improving my skills.
Reflections
I think self-criticism is a very valuable soft skill, and in my case, I would like to practice it much more. For example, in my day-to-day life, I know that I cannot learn everything at once and that I will probably repeat many questions. What I have done is record sessions or tutorials so that I can get that repetition and practice without bothering my team too much. In the end, it is also about being aware that everyone has responsibilities, continuing to ask for what we need, and creating materials that suit us better.
